Metal Fencing for Yard

Metal fencing for a yard is one of the more popular choices of fencing materials. It is relatively inexpensive, long lasting, and provides the advantage of being see through.

Metal Fencing for Yard

Metal is a very popular fencing material. Chain link fencing is one of the most common fencing types in cases where containment is the most important purpose of the fence. Of course, chain link fencing does not offer privacy as it does not block the view into the yard completely. Many people view the see through quality of metal fencing for yards to be an advantage rather than a disadvantage. Chain link fences come in either traditional hot dipped or vinyl coated styles.

However, chain link is not the only type of fencing available. Galvanized steel coated with a baked on weatherproofing compound is used for many styles of post type fencing. This is an alternative to wrought iron fences, but often has a similar appearance. This style of fencing is used as swimming pool enclosures when privacy is not a key issue.

In recent years, aluminum has become a common metal used for fencing. It is often used in applications where wrought iron was used in the past. In can be crafted into just about any fencing style and is virtually weatherproof and maintenance free. About the only suggested maintenance is a good washing every year or so.

One interesting example of a metal fencing that is right out of America's past is the barbed wire fence. This type of fencing was first used in the West in areas where wood was scarce and stone fences were way too labor extensive for the large areas that had to be covered. The barbed wire served to discourage cattle from breaking through the fence which was a problem with smooth wire fences. Barbed wire fencing is not used as frequently in modern times. It is certainly a poor choice for residential yard fencing.

Metal has replaced wood as the most commonly used fencing material. It has the advantage of being more resistant to weather and stronger. As wood became more scarce and more expensive, it was natural that an alternative material would be found to replace it. The ability to coat the metal fences with vinyl and other weatherproofing eliminated, or seriously reduced, rusting which was the major drawback of earlier metal fencing.
